How many words? A guide to word counts that matter

"How long should it be?" is one of the most common writing questions. Word count isn't everything, but hitting the right range for your format genuinely helps — for grades, for readers, and for search rankings.

Common targets

  • School essay: usually specified — 500, 1,000, or 1,500 words. Staying within ±10% of the assignment matters.
  • Blog post for SEO: in-depth articles that rank well often run 1,000–2,000 words, because they cover a topic thoroughly. Quality still beats padding.
  • College application essay: typically 500–650 words — and going over the limit can get you cut off.
  • Cover letter: 250–400 words. Short and focused wins.
  • Meta description: not words but characters — around 150–160 so it isn't truncated in search results.

Social media limits

  • X/Twitter post: 280 characters.
  • Instagram caption: up to 2,200 characters, but the first ~125 are what people see before "more."
  • LinkedIn post: ~3,000 characters, though shorter often performs better.

Words vs. characters

Essays care about words; social platforms and SEO snippets care about characters. A good counter shows both at once, plus sentences and reading time, so you can check whatever your format demands.

Don't write to the count

Counts are a guide, not a goal. Padding to hit a number makes writing worse. Write what the topic needs, then use the count to check you're in range and trim what's redundant.
