How to merge PDF files (and keep them private)

You've got a scanned contract, an invoice, and a cover letter as three separate PDFs, and you need to send them as one. Merging PDFs is simple — but where you do it matters more than most people realize.

What "merging" actually does

Merging stitches multiple PDF files into a single document, preserving each page exactly as it was. No quality is lost — you're not re-rendering anything, just placing existing pages one after another in the order you choose.

The steps

  1. Gather the PDFs you want to combine.
  2. Add them to a merge tool and arrange them in the order you want.
  3. Merge, and download the single combined file.

The privacy trap

Most "merge PDF" websites upload your files to their servers to combine them.

If your PDFs contain anything sensitive — a contract, an ID, medical or financial documents — that's a real exposure. Your files sit on someone else's server, subject to their retention and security. A browser-based merger processes everything locally on your device: the files never leave your computer, which is both faster and genuinely private. That's how the PDF tools on this site work.

Useful companions

Merging often goes hand in hand with two other operations: splitting out only the pages you need first, and reordering pages after combining. And if the merged result is too big to email, compressing it is the next step.
