What is HEIC, and how do you convert it to JPG?

You AirDrop or email a photo from your iPhone and the person on the other end says "it won't open." The file ends in .heic, and their app has no idea what to do with it. Here's what HEIC is and how to fix the compatibility headache.

What HEIC is

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format Apple uses by default for photos since iPhone 7 / iOS 11. It's built on the HEIF standard and its big advantage is size: HEIC stores a photo at roughly half the file size of an equivalent JPG with the same or better quality. On your phone, that saves a lot of storage.

Why it causes trouble

The catch is compatibility. Apple devices handle HEIC natively, but many places still don't:

  • Older Windows versions and some photo software can't open it without a plugin.
  • Lots of websites, forums, and upload forms reject .heic.
  • Some chat apps and email clients show it as an unopenable attachment.

JPG, by contrast, opens literally everywhere — so converting is the reliable fix when you need to share.

Converting without losing quality

Converting HEIC → JPG is a one-step operation. A couple of tips:

  • Convert a copy, keep the original. HEIC is smaller and higher quality, so keep it as your archive and share the JPG.
  • Quality is preserved at high settings — you won't see a difference for normal use; the JPG is just a bit larger.
  • Need transparency or graphics? Convert to PNG instead. For photos, JPG or WebP is the right target.

Or stop it at the source

If you'd rather your iPhone just shoot JPG, go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. New photos will be JPG — though you lose the storage savings. For everything already on your phone, converting on demand is the simplest path.
